Unreal Engine Now Free to Use
This week, Epic Games announced that the Unreal Engine is now free to download and use for all developers.
This replaces the subscription model introduced last year; potential developers now only need to create a free account on the Unreal Engine website and they can download the full Unreal Engine. Furthermore, developers can link their GitHub accounts and have full access to the source code for the Unreal Engine as well!
Note that this does not mean the Unreal Engine 4 is free. Developers will continue to pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. The lower barrier for entry, however, allows indie developers to work with the engine without monthly costs, and only pay if their titles are successful.
